When we hear “data breach,” the first thought is often: Was any money stolen?

But money doesn’t have to disappear for a data breach to affect you.

In August 2026, Zenith Bank disclosed that it was investigating unauthorized access to some customer data. The bank stated that financial information, banking services and digital channels were not compromised.

So, if no money was stolen, why should exposed data matter?

Information such as your name, email address, phone number, workplace or other personal details can help criminals understand who you are.

Combined with information from other sources, it can be used to make a fraudulent email, phone call or message appear much more convincing.

Nigeria’s ngCERT recently also warned about compromised email addresses and passwords circulating on underground forums, highlighting risks including account takeover and unauthorized access.

A Breach Today Can Enable an Attack Tomorrow

Imagine receiving a call from someone who already knows your name, where you work and other information about you.

You may naturally be more likely to believe them.

That is why protecting information is not only about protecting passwords or money. Small pieces of information can become valuable when they fall into the wrong hands.

What Should You Do?

• Be mindful of the information you share, both at work and personally.
• Treat unexpected calls, emails and messages with caution even when the sender knows information about you.
• Never assume that knowing personal details proves someone’s identity.
• Avoid reusing passwords across different accounts.
• Report suspicious requests or activity promptly through the appropriate channel.

A data breach may not take money from your account immediately, but exposed information can create opportunities for future attacks.
